According to Injury Facts 2017, choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death. Choking happens when someone's airway suddenly gets blocked, either fully or partly, so they can't breathe.
Suspect someone is choking if they are clutching their throat, they cannot speak or cannot breath.
In about an hour, learn how to recognize this life-threatening emergency, call for help and perform age-appropriate procedures for adults, children, and infants. There are variations in the delivery of life-saving procedures for adults and infants.
Most cities and towns in Massachusetts require that restaurants and other eating establishments train their employees to perform the Heimlich Maneuver and other life-saving actions in the event of a choking event. This requirement is outlined in Department of Public Health 105 CMR 590 and 105 CMR 605. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of attendance which is valid for 2 years.
Provided you perform only the skills you were taught and to the best of your ability, you will be protected by Good Samaritan legislation, available in all 50 states.
